Gwendolyn Brooks is in my eyes considered a modernist poet. She wrote an anti-abortion
poem called “The Mother”. Brooks won a Pulitzer Prize for winning author and great poet, she
wrote often about human struggles in America. “The Mother” is a complex poem in which
Brooks, being the narrator, is grieving the loss of a child that she aborted. Brooks wrote this
poem in a modern free verse style of writing which was common in that time frame. Abortion
was illegal at that time but there were place underground servicing abortions. Brooks tell a sad
heart wrenching story about abortions and she explains that it has a concious and unconscious
affect it has on a woman. She stated that abortion is an emotional portrayal of the guilt and
shame a woman have to carry after having an abortion. I do not believe that she was referring to
one abortion because she stated in her poem that there were children and abortions. I question the
anti-abortion perception and her being concious and unconscious. What are Brooks true feelings

“baby tears” to their grave. After committing an act like this Brooks stated that in her
deliberateness she was not deliberate she stated “Believe that even in my deliberateness I was not
deliberate”.(Brooks, 2013). I wonder to myself and question how can she be both deliberate and
not deliberate? Her emotions are all over the place and in my opinion just as I am a reader this
brings shock, uneasy and a little horror in my mind. This is considered murder of child. The
image in my mind of the setting of this poem conjures a person that is deprived and unfortunate.
Brooks faced uncertainty and fear of having the opportunity of bringing a child into this …
