Chapter 14: Religious Diversity (How We Understand Differences among Religions)
Introduction
Typically, religious diversity could be described as the perception that significant
variances or differences exist among a variety of religions as well as religious practices and
beliefs (Fahy & Bock, 2019). This diversity in religions is also referred to as pluralism and has
always been recognized by individuals outside the most isolated and smallest communities.
Religious pluralism describes an attitude concerning the assortment of a co-existing religious
belief system in society. Thus, religious diversity or pluralism could be defined as “respecting
and valuing the otherness of other individuals.” According to chapter fourteen of the book
Reason and Religious Belief, in our complex and broadening world and the emergence of
different religions, we cannot conscientiously affirm one specific religious view or perspective
and assume that the other religious views do not matter (Peterson et al., 2008). The religious
diversity has been triggered by modern communications, immigration, educational exchange,
international businesses, as well as tourism due to the cultural integration which forms the
hallmark of the prevailing or novel millennium. Therefore, religious diversity is a term that is
used to describe the worldview according to which an individual’s religion is not held to be the
exclusive or sole source of truth, hence leading to toleration where an individual acknowledges
that some mutually exclusive true values or claims and equally valid truths exist in other diverse
religions. This paper seeks to answer the ten questions found at the end of chapter fourteen of
Peterson and his co-authors’ book “Religion and Religious Belief.”
Question 1: Differences between various Religions
Different religions have emerged in the world as a result of variance in religious beliefs
and cultural practices. Some of the major world’s religions include Christianity, Judaism, Islam,

Hinduism, and Buddhism (Peterson et al., 2008). Although these religions show few similarities,
they depict numerous differences that include the following. First, I will discuss Christianity.
Christians are usually Trinitarian. In addition, the followers think that Jesus is responsible for all
of their sins and goodness. Thus Christians perceive that they are free to do anything except the
bad things. For example, Christians can eat anything, including pork or any other animals they
want. Also, Christians can wear anything; a woman can wear anything even they can be nude in
public, anyone can style anything they want, no prohibition. Moreover, they can visit the church
or their religious worshipping place at their will, and thus, they are free to worship. Therefore,
Christians are free doing anything they think is good for them since they will not be punished for
their bad deeds as Jesus was already crucified for their sins.
The second religion is Hinduism. Hindus are polytheistic, and they believe that Brahman
or Ultimate Reality is nondual absolute, meaning that it does not have distinctions. They worship
many goddesses and gods, including animals and nature. Hindus think their life is an eternal
adventure until the last purity. Followers of this religion believe in continuous birth and death.
Besides, they make idols of their gods in their own hands. Contrary to Christians, Hindus cannot
live together without marrying and cannot marry the second time when the first one is still valid.
Also, Hindus do not eat beef as they claim it comes from God, a cow. Some caste of Hindus does
not eat any animals but vegetables, although they can eat anything other than a cow. They can
drink alcohol and other intoxication liquor, as no drink is prohibited in India. Additionally,
Hindus have no strict prohibition against dress and lifestyle.
The third religion is Islam. Muslims are strictly monotheistic, meaning that they believe
in one God named Allah. They also believe that Muhammad is Allah’s last and final messenger,
including many others before him. Muslim…
